Background: Yuugi's wiki page | Yu-Gi-Oh! wiki page
Personality: When Yuugi begins the series, he is a shy kid who often gets beaten up by bullies. He lacks courage, self-esteem, and the belief that he can really be much of anything. He didn't have any friends and often just kept to himself while in school, not having the self-confidence to do much of anything except survive.
However, Yuugi (for eight years) had been working on an ancient artifact known as the Sennen Puzzle, a pendant that had been shattered into hundreds of pieces. Legend had it that if you managed to put together the Sennen Puzzle (something that was both incredibly difficult and probably impossible to the normal person), you were granted one wish. Yuugi, at sixteen, finally managed to complete the Puzzle. His one wish? To have a true friend. In putting together the Sennen Puzzle, Yuugi was granted the powers of the Sennen item, which included providing a host for a 3,000 year old Pharaoh. Around the same time of obtaining Atem (said Pharaoh), Yuugi made more friends: Katsuya Jounouchi, Hiroto Honda, and Mazaki Anzu. These four people are the most important people in the universe to Yuugi -- and as the Puzzle granted Yuugi's wish of having friends, Yuugi finally had what he wanted most in the world: to not be alone.
Yuugi's friends are his biggest motivation in the series. He would do anything and everything to protect them, even to the point of death. Yuugi is extraordinarily selfless, and though some of it is because he lacks the self-esteem to believe himself worth saving sometimes, most of it is the strong belief that his friends need to be protected. This extends to each of the people in his life, ranging from his best friend Jounouchi to his rival, Kaiba Seto. Yuugi has done everything from purposefully sabotage duels in order to protect his friends to losing his soul in order to keep them safe. He hasn't regretted any of it; all of it was worth it to do justice to his wish and keep the friends he has safe and happy.
Yuugi is also a large believer in fate and destiny. As the chosen holder of the Sennen Puzzle, it is Yuugi's duty to protect the soul of the Pharaoh that is destined to save the world and assist him in any way possible to help him move on to the next life. Yuugi admits several times in the series that his life has become twice as confusing and difficult since putting together the Puzzle. However, Yuugi is always completely willing to shoulder whatever burden is placed upon him. He is determined, extraordinarily smart, and above all else, bound by his word. If Yuugi says he is going to do something, then he is going to do something, even if that requires putting himself in harm's way in order to fulfill his destiny.
Despite this, many people believe Yuugi to be the "weaker half" of the two souls that inhabit his body. Atem, the spirit that shares Yuugi's body and mind, often feels that the strain of upholding his destiny is too much for the young teenager and often steps in to save him, claiming that certain situations are too dangerous. Atem is loud, confident, and brazen -- Yuugi, on the other hand, is more patient and quiet, calculating in his own way without having to declare it to the world. While Atem is often shown dueling and in dangerous situations, Yuugi is the one who often pushes Atem up when he feels weak himself. Whenever Atem doubts himself or his abilities, Yuugi is always there to tell him he can do it. Whenever Atem steps over a line, Yuugi seizes control again in order to protect him. By the end of the series, Yuugi has turned from a shy and quiet bullied boy into a powerful duelist with a great amount of courage and strength, the true definition of a lion not needing to roar in order to prove he has courage.
While Yuugi has numerous strengths (his courage, his loyalty, his strength), he also has weaknesses. Yuugi sometimes lacks self-confidence, not believing himself to be able to accomplish what he has to do. The other characters in the show have a running joke of the "other-Yuugi" being stronger and better than he is, and while Yuugi often takes it in jest, it is shown to bother him several times in the series. While Yuugi by the end of the series realizes that he is his own person, it is an ongoing battle for him in the series to realize his own self worth apart from Atem. A large portion of the Ceremonial Duel (in addition to sending Atem to the next life) was to obtain Yuugi his own independence. It's a long and difficult road, but Yuugi eventually realizes his own self worth, even if his willingness to sacrifice himself to save people he believes to be more worth is a common theme in the series.
Yuugi's greatest weakness (his selflessness) is also one of his greatest strengths. Yuugi wished for a true friend (and was granted one, in Atem), but once he realized that Yuugi was granted the spirit within the Puzzle only to have to let him go, he carries that burden without complaint. He knows that one day, he will have to say goodbye to Atem and send him to the next life, and Yuugi accepts this responsibility. It is shown several times in the series that Yuugi is afraid to be without him and Yuugi sacrifices himself for Atem more than once, so it is fairly obvious that Yuugi cares very deeply for the spirit of the Puzzle. When it's time to let him go, Yuugi is initially overcome with emotion, but he eventually sends Atem on with a smile, wishing him luck in the afterlife. This strength, this ability to give up something he loves in order to ensure the happiness of another, is something that Yuugi obtains over the duration of the series. Yuugi realizes his own happiness is worth something, but that it shouldn't come at the cost of someone else.
Another one of Yuugi's weaknesses is that he always believes the best in people. A common thread in Yu-Gi-Oh! is that the villains aren't truly evil (with the exception of a rare few). Most of the foes that Yuugi faces are normal people who have been thrown a really shitty hand in life. While most of his friends tend to believe the worst, Yuugi always believes the best. This often gets Yuugi into trouble, trusting the wrong people. However, despite this, Yuugi always has a line. While he will go to the ends of the earth to make sure no one dies, Yuugi also knows that trusting people too far can be a handicap. Atem often steps in to let Yuugi know when he's being too blindly trusting (and is often met with an eyeroll and a scolding that Atem needs to be more trusting), but Yuugi never gives up the hope that there is a thread of good in all people. Without that hope, Yuugi would have been lost long ago to the darkness. It's that strength in hope and light that gives Yuugi the perseverance to survive, even though his naivete sometimes gets him into trouble.
By the end of the series, Yuugi is a strong young man, who is capable of handling whatever life throws at him. However, the biggest point of Yuugi's character is that he really didn't undergo a transformation at all. Yuugi had always been the strong, capable, intelligent, passionate, compassionate, sensitive young man that he ended the series with. It was simply resting within him, unbeknownst to him. Once it was awakened, Yuugi takes his strengths and weaknesses and runs with them, doing everything within his power to live up to his destiny and claim his fate for his own. Mutou Yuugi may have started out the series as a supposed weakling, but he ends it with much strength.
As Yuugi puts it, his story is just beginning.
Abilities: Yuugi is lacking the Sennen Puzzle, as he's taken from post canon. He doesn't have any supernatural abilities without it. His only abilities are an uncanny ability to be pretty awesome at any game he plays and be an awesome duelist and utilize the power of friendship for good. That's basically it.
Other: Yuugi will have his duel disk and his duel monsters deck!
First Person Sample: [Yuugi is shown with red rimmed eyes and a pale demeanor, though he's smiling. He looks tired, worn out, but fairly calm all things considered. And when he speaks, his voice is light and warm. Confident, even.
It might be falsely confident, but Yuugi has figured out how this whole amulet thing works out, which is a good first step. (Even though he's a little wary of amulets, but this one seems fairly safe.)]
Hi -- ahm. I guess... where do I even start...
[Yuugi speaks to himself, frowning, before he continues a little sheepishly. Come on, Yuugi, keep it together. You need to figure stuff out; thinking about the real world isn't going to help.]
I'm Yuugi -- just Yuugi is fine. I have a couple of questions on where I am and how I wound up here, but my biggest question is whether or not any of my friends are here. I'm sure they'll recognize me and find me eventually, but -- I'm looking for my grandfather, Jounouchi-kun, Honda-kun -- Anzu, Bakura-kun. The Ishtars, the Kaibas -- anyway, if they're already here, they've probably been asking for me, we were kind of in a... collapsing tomb...
[Er.]
-- sorry, anyway -- today was a long day. If any of my friends are here, I'd appreciate being pointed in the right direction! And thanks in advance for any help!
Third Person Sample: Atem was gone.
It was a bizarre moment, when the Pharaoh walked through the door. Yuugi felt an impossible weight in his chest (grief, he knew, because this was a death, and death had to be grieved), but also a newfound sense of freedom, of relief. Atem had successfully passed on. Yuugi had completed his destiny. And now, the both of them could live their lives the way they were meant to be lived. Together, but separate -- besides, even though they were apart, Yuugi knew they would meet again.
As the doors closed, there was a moment of silence as Yuugi stared at the doors, trying to comprehend what he had just done. The finality, the sealing of his destiny -- he could hear Isis and Malik explaining to the others that the job was done, but Yuugi needed a moment of consideration, of pause. It had been so long, so much blood, sweat, and tears, but Yuugi wouldn't have traded it for the world.
He had wished for a friend, and he had gotten one. One that would last him for all of eternity, once they met again.
There was a crackling of rock, a collapse of the tomb -- the Sennen Items were vanishing and Yuugi felt himself be pulled backwards and suddenly they were running. The tomb was collapsing, sealing away the darkness once and for all, and Yuugi was pulled from his thoughts into the pure adrenaline filled thought of surviving. He was running, Jounouchi was shouting at Honda to run faster, and suddenly --
-- Mutou Yuugi was no longer in ancient Egypt.
He abruptly stopped running, his heart pounding as he spun on his heel, shouting, "Jounouchi-kun -- ?!" but no one else was there. Another quick spin caused Yuugi's eyes to focus to notice there was no desert, no tomb, no inscriptions, no door -- his hand instinctively went to his chest, to grasp the chain of the Sennen Puzzle, but it wasn't there anymore. Yuugi was on his own, in a strange new city, and he drew in a deep breath before letting it out quickly, forcing down his initial panic. He was by himself, but that was meant to happen. Yuugi was alone, but he wasn't helpless. He needed to focus, something must have happened. This wasn't the first time Yuugi had been forced through different realities, times, or dimensions -- something must have happened, maybe the Ceremonial Duel went wrong, maybe Atem didn't --
"Calm down," Yuugi said finally to himself, quiet as he shook his head, trying to gather his thoughts and force himself to be calm. "It's going to be fine. I'm fine, and the others are probably fine too. This isn't the first time I've... hit my head and wound up in another universe."
Even saying it out loud sounded stupid.
"Aaah, mou hitori no boku, I wish you had waited ten minutes before crossing over," Yuugi murmured, pulling his coat around him a bit more before setting toward what looked like a city. "I could use some help."
Questions: Yuugi's duel disk has holographic projectors and can create fake monsters -- if he chooses to duel with it, would the duel disk be operational? If it's not, that's okay! He can play the old fashion way. :)
